Understanding Your Loan Results
The Monthly Payment is the fixed amount you owe your lender every month for the duration of the loan. For fixed-rate loans this never changes, making budgeting straightforward. Your Total Repayment is simply the monthly payment multiplied by the number of months — it tells you the full cost of the loan from first to last payment.
The Total Interest Paid is the difference between total repayment and the original loan amount. This is the cost of borrowing. In the early months of any amortizing loan, most of each payment goes toward interest; toward the end of the term, most goes toward principal. The amortization schedule shows this shift month by month.
The Interest as % of Loan metric puts the cost of borrowing in perspective. A short-term loan at a high rate and a long-term loan at a low rate can end up costing similar proportions of the original principal. Use this figure to compare loan options fairly.
Loan Payment Formula
M = P × [r(1 + r)^n] ÷ [(1 + r)^n − 1]
M = monthly payment | P = principal | r = monthly rate (annual rate ÷ 12) | n = total months
This is the standard fixed-rate amortization formula used by banks and financial institutions worldwide. The key insight is that r is your annual interest rate divided by 12 — so a 6% annual rate becomes 0.5% per month (0.005 as a decimal). When the interest rate is zero, the formula simplifies to P ÷ n, meaning the loan is divided into equal principal payments with no interest charge.

A personal loan is typically unsecured, has a shorter term (1–7 years) and carries a higher interest rate. A mortgage is secured against a property, usually runs 15–30 years and offers lower rates because the lender holds the asset as collateral. Use our Mortgage Calculator for home loans.
At a 7% annual interest rate over 60 months (5 years), a $10,000 loan has a monthly payment of approximately $198.01. Total repayment is $11,880.60, meaning you pay $1,880.60 in interest. A shorter 36-month term raises the monthly payment to $308.77 but cuts total interest to $1,115.72.
Yes. Any extra payment goes directly toward the principal balance. A lower principal means less interest accrues each month, shortening the loan term and saving you money overall. Even small additional monthly payments can save hundreds in interest on a multi-year loan.
Most lenders require a minimum credit score of 580–620 for personal loan approval, though the best rates go to borrowers with scores above 720. A higher score not only improves approval odds but can reduce your rate by several percentage points, significantly lowering total interest paid.
