Understanding Fuel Economy Results
L/100km (litres per 100 kilometres) is the standard metric used in Europe, Australia and most of the world. Lower is better — a 6 L/100km car is more efficient than a 9 L/100km car. MPG (miles per gallon) is used in the UK and USA — higher is better. Note that UK MPG and US MPG use different gallon sizes, so a UK rating of 40 MPG is only equivalent to 33 MPG in US terms.
km/L (kilometres per litre) is used in Japan, India and parts of Latin America — higher is better, like MPG. All four units express the same underlying relationship between distance and fuel; they just invert and scale differently.
The conversion constants (282.48 and 235.21) derive from the number of kilometres in a mile (1.60934) multiplied by the litres in a UK gallon (4.54609) or US gallon (3.78541) respectively.

Questions Fréquentes
(Carburant utilisé en L ÷ Distance en km) × 100. Ex. : 45 L pour 500 km = 9 L/100km.
Environ 7 à 9 L/100km en conduite mixte pour une essence.
MPG (UK) = 282.48 ÷ L/100km. MPG (US) = 235.21 ÷ L/100km. Example: 8 L/100km = 35.3 MPG (UK) or 29.4 MPG (US). Use the Convert tab above for instant results.
Trip Cost = (Distance × L/100km ÷ 100) × Price per litre. Example: 300 km at 7.5 L/100km with fuel at €1.85/L = 22.5 litres × €1.85 = €41.63.
6–7 L/100km (40–47 MPG UK) is considered economical for a petrol car. Modern hybrids can achieve 4–5 L/100km. Average family SUVs consume 9–12 L/100km. Anything below 6 L/100km is excellent.
A UK gallon is 4.546 litres; a US gallon is 3.785 litres. So 40 MPG (UK) = only 33.3 MPG (US). Always check which gallon standard is being used when comparing fuel economy figures across different markets.
