How to Measure Your Foot Length

1
Place a sheet of A4 or letter paper on a hard floor. Place it against a wall.
2
Stand barefoot with your heel touching the wall. Your weight should be evenly distributed.
3
Use a pencil to mark the end of your longest toe. This is usually the big toe, but not always.
4
Measure from the wall (or from the mark for your heel) to the toe mark in centimetres.
5
Repeat for both feet and use the larger measurement. Most people have one foot slightly larger than the other.

For the most accurate result, measure in the afternoon or evening — feet naturally expand slightly throughout the day. If you are between sizes in the chart, always choose the larger size.

Understanding Men's Shoe Size Systems

There are four main shoe sizing systems used globally. EU (European) sizes, also called Paris Point, are based on the inner length of the shoe in units of ⅔ cm. They are used across Continental Europe and are the most widely referenced international standard. UK sizes use a different scale — they are approximately 1 size smaller than US sizes and use barleycorns (⅓ inch) as the unit. US sizes are 1 size larger than UK sizes. Japanese (JP) sizes simply use the foot length in centimetres, making them the most intuitive system.

When buying shoes from a different country, always convert from your foot length rather than translating between size numbers directly. A US 10 is not the same as a UK 10 — the UK equivalent is 9.5.

Frequently Asked Questions

Stand on paper with your heel against a wall. Mark your longest toe. Measure from the wall to the mark in cm. Measure both feet and use the larger number. For best results measure in the afternoon when feet are at their largest.
EU 42 = UK 8 = US 9. This corresponds to a foot length of approximately 27.5 cm. EU 42 is one of the most common men's shoe sizes globally.
US men's sizes are 1 size larger than UK sizes. UK 8 = US 9, UK 9 = US 10. EU sizes use a completely different scale based on the Paris Point system (each unit ≈ 6.67 mm).
Always size up. A slightly large shoe can be managed with thicker socks or an insole. A shoe that is too small causes blisters and discomfort and can lead to long-term foot problems. Try shoes on in the afternoon when feet are at their largest.
