Free Density Calculator — Find Density, Mass or Volume Using ρ = m ÷ V

Calculate density from mass and volume, find mass from density and volume, or find volume from mass and density.

Density Calculator

How to Use

Choose the mode based on what you want to find. Find Density: enter mass (kg) and volume (m³) to get density in kg/m³. Find Mass: enter density and volume to get mass in kg. Find Volume: enter mass and density to get volume in m³. All values use SI units (kg and m³). For other units, convert first using the Mass & Weight converter.

Worked Examples

Water

Volume0.001 m³
Density = 1,000 kg/m³
Aluminium
Density2,700 kg/m³
Volume0.01 m³
Mass = 27 kg
Iron block

Density7,874 kg/m³
Volume = 0.02 m³

Frequently Asked Questions

Density is mass per unit volume: ρ = m ÷ V. It tells you how much matter is packed into a given space. Water has a density of 1,000 kg/m³; iron is about 7,874 kg/m³; air is approximately 1.225 kg/m³.
ρ (density) = m (mass) ÷ V (volume). Rearranged: m = ρ × V, and V = m ÷ ρ. This triangle — ρ = m/V — is one of the most fundamental formulas in physics and chemistry.
Pure water at 4°C has a density of exactly 1,000 kg/m³ (1 g/cm³ or 1 kg/litre). This is the reference point for specific gravity: materials denser than 1,000 kg/m³ sink in water; less dense materials float.
Multiply by 1,000. A density of 1 g/cm³ = 1,000 kg/m³. This is because 1 m³ = 1,000,000 cm³ and 1 kg = 1,000 g, giving a conversion factor of 1,000.
